CAMPING ROCKS! yeah right....
While it did rain friggen buckets for the two hours prior to our arrival, it had stopped shortly before I showed up. Since this is a camp that is supported solely by area Lutheran Churches, most of the work is done by volunteers. Since no one valunteered to cut the grass before the long weekend it retained most of the rain that had just fallen, making setting up camp very cold and very wet. The good part of it all was that it didn't rain again until Monday at 3 a.m. Then we got to break camp in wet grass. That's always nice when that happens, don't you think?
As you saw from yesterday's post I got many awesome shots! That for me was the best part of the whole thing. I even got great shots of the kids. (Sorry, I won't put pictures of my kids up on the internet. I will, however, email them individually on request.)
I was very frustrated with myself in that I did not ever read one complete sentance all weekend long. Frankly, I was just too wore out. (That's saying something coming from a book whore like me.)
I was the only one from the Incurable Savant Clan to become injured. I was chasing Big Sister, who was running from me and punishment. (not a spanking) I ran across the top of a wall made with extra large garden brick, much to my suprise and chagrin, they were not cemented together. I stepped to close to the edge of the ledge took a big dive onto the parking area. The parking area was defined by pad of large gravel. I wouldn't call it gravel, to my eye it consisted of larger than normal jagged stones. I have bad knees to begin with so landing squarely on one is not particularly enjoyable. Thankfully, I suffered very few cuts and scrapes, however, I limped for most of Saturday, and all of Sunday. By Monday morning every thing seemed back to normal, save the large purple mark on my right knee.
My dear sister-in-law took my two kids and her my brother's two kids on a nature hike, sans bug spray. In her defence, she is normally a very level headed carring individual, with a keen eye for the needs of small children. Evidently, she was having such a great time when some one said lets go on a hike she spaced off the OFF. Upon their return we had a major leauge tick removal festival, complete with crockadile tears from more than one child.
After that, dear sister-in-law told us that as they walked deep into the forest, she spotted a large deer. She whispers to my 7 year old "Little Man", hey look over there at the deer. In order to spread the word efficently "Little Man" screams, ITS A DEER RUN!!!!!! The only two to run, where Little Man and the deer, so much for subtlty on my sister-in-law's part.
The kids had a great time, and if you don't tell anyone I said this, I did too. My family is already planning to go back for Labor Day Weekend.
If I still lived in Michigan or Minnesota, this is the type of camping I would want to do. I have never done it, but as a child I have built and igloo with my brother and our grandfather. We even got our picture in the local paper.
